The Kensington Grandfather Clock

Cabinet
From the 1740s the introduction of mahogany from the West Indies and Central America became very popular, in particular the flamed curl veneers. John Ellicott (1706-1772) produced many clocks in this style, of which the ``Kensington'' is a typical example. The brreak-arch solid mahogany cabinet features reeded quarter columns to the trunk and fluted ``Corinthian'' pillars to the hood. The dial features the phases of the moon believed to be of benefit to seafarers and farmers.
